Moving to Maryland, Harden went to Surrattsville High School in Clinton. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980 with the degree of theater, she continued her education at the University of Texas at Austin. Harden enrolled at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1988 to earn her MFA.
